How to Get a Minecraft Cape in 2026: Every Method Explained

Want a cape on your Minecraft character? You are not alone: how to get a Minecraft cape is one of the most searched Minecraft questions every year. The good news is that in 2026 there are more ways than ever. This guide covers every legitimate method, how long each takes, and the fastest route if you want a cape today.

What counts as an official Minecraft cape?

An official cape is issued by Mojang and attached to your Microsoft account. It shows to every player on servers that display capes, with no mods needed, and most work on both Java and Bedrock. Mod capes (OptiFine, PvP clients) are different: only people using the same mod can see them. More in OptiFine vs official capes.

Method 1: Livestream watch-time drops

Mojang regularly hands out capes for watching Minecraft livestreams on Twitch or TikTok for a few minutes. Recent examples include the Purple Heart Cape (Twitch, 2024), the Follower's Cape (TikTok LIVE, 2024) and the Builder Cape (Twitch and TikTok, 2026).

• Cost: free
• Catch: only during the promotion window, and some drops are region-locked

Method 2: Movie and game promotions

Big releases often come with a cape. A Minecraft Movie brought the Home Cape and the Menace Cape in 2025, and Minecraft Dungeons II has its own Corrupted Creeper Cape.

• Cost: usually free with a short task
• Catch: limited time only

Method 3: Real-world events

Some of the rarest capes come from in-person events, like the Experience Cape from Minecraft Experience: Villager Rescue. Historically, Minecon attendees received yearly capes too.

• Cost: the event ticket
• Catch: you have to be there in person

Method 4: Redeem an unused official code (fastest)

Not everyone who earns a cape code redeems it. Those unused official codes are the only way to get a cape after its promotion has ended, and the fastest way to get one today. You redeem the code on your own account at minecraft.net/redeem, exactly as if you had earned it yourself.

• Cost: from very cheap (Aurora, Builder, Home) to premium for rare capes (Crafter, Follower's)
• Time: about a minute with instant delivery

What to avoid: buying accounts

Never buy a Minecraft account just because it has a cape. It breaks Microsoft's terms and the original owner can often take it back. A legit seller only ever gives you a code. Read are cape codes safe?

How to redeem and equip your cape

1. Go to minecraft.net/redeem, sign in, and enter your code.
2. Java: Minecraft Launcher → Skins → pick the cape.
3. Bedrock: Dressing Room → Capes → equip.
